During his press conference on December 9, 2021, dedicated to the presentation of the main axes of the French Presidency of the European Union (PFUE), the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron announced that he wanted to promote the establishment of a “European civic service”. This system, already implemented in France, Germany, Italy, Malta and Luxembourg, allows, on a voluntary basis, any European citizen under 25 years of age to carry out “a university exchange or apprenticeship, internship or community action” for up to six months in another EU Member State. Like the ERASMUS+ educational programme, European civic service should make it possible to deepen the feeling of belonging to our Europe.
Under the aegis of the French Embassy, the French Institute of Greece is co-organising, on March 3, an event entitled « Towards a European civic service in Greece? », in partnership with two French associations working in this field for several years, the collective for a European civic service, Unis-Cité and a Greek association Ecogenia.
Greece presents itself as a potential key partner in this European-scale project. By tradition
military service as well as the variety of volunteer programs offered by the Greek authorities, it is undeniable that Greece has long promoted civic and social engagement. The CSCE, Unis-Cité and Ecogenia associations would like this commitment to flourish at European level as well.
